Ambergris

Ambergris may be the most mysterious material in all of perfumery. It forms in the gut of the sperm whale around the squid beaks it cannot digest, then is expelled at sea. That is where its transformation begins: years, sometimes decades, floating in sun and salt, oxidizing and paling, until it washes up on a beach in New Zealand, the Bahamas or the coast of Yemen, where a lucky walker picks it up.

A legendary substance

Medieval Arabs burned it in their palaces; Renaissance Europeans carried it in pomanders; Melville gives it a whole chapter of Moby-Dick. It has been the foundation of the greatest perfumes, chypres and orientals above all, before chemistry learned to imitate it. Real ambergris remains rare, and every piece is unique.

Grades

Fresh, it is black, soft and frankly smells of the sea. As it ages it turns grey, then white and waxy, and its scent refines. Grade A denotes the palest, most aged pieces, with a soft, complex fragrance; grade B, greyer and younger, has a more marine, animal character. Étienne works only with beach-found ambergris, never from hunting, and documents the provenance of each piece.

In the workshop

Grated and steeped in alcohol for months, it yields a tincture that serves as fixative and base note in the shop's perfumes. A trace is enough: ambergris does not impose its own smell, it makes the others last and glow.
